Backcountry Trail Run - Mailbox Peak

Ready for a local vertical classic? Mailbox gives a real summit feel in the final ascent as you come out of the tree line into a staircase of rock up to the summit.

  • Very Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 9.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,100 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 4,841 ft
  • ⇒ 7AM ⇐, on the trail by 7:15AM, please be on-time since we probably won't have phone service in this area.
Yea it's early, parking lots fill up by 8am so want to try to make sure everyone has a place to park.
  • Carpooling encouraged.
  • Meet at the Mailbox Peak TH @ 7am. Discover Pass required for parking inside the gate. No pass required to park outside the gate.
  • DO NOT count on mobile phone service in this area!
  • Directions

  • We will go up the old Mailbox Peak route which will be nearly all hiking and then run down the new Mailbox Peak trail.  Running typically does not start until on the way down after we pass the old mailbox trail junction where the trail is more suited for running.
  • Poles Recommended - I'll be using poles going up and down.  Anyone else using poles we'll go over some pole safety tips at the trailhead.  Helpful to distribute work going up and relieve some knee pressure going down.  They can do double duty as a standing roller for tight muscles.
  • Bad weather, high winds, wildfire smoke, public health guidance and other circumstances may cancel / reschedule / relocate this trip.
  • Navigation - this is a backcountry so familiarize yourself with the route and recommended to have an offline version of the map either printed or download.

    • Strava: click here
    • Gaia GPS (Download offline map): click here
    • All Trails (Download offline map): click here

Gaia GPS and All Trails both support downloading offline maps which is required for backcountry trail runs due to limited cellular connectivity.

    • For pace, thinking that this should take around 1.5 hours to get to the summit and around 2.5 to 3 hours overall.
    • I will send out an email a couple of days before the run with last minute details including my mobile number and Spot X - satellite number.
