Alpine Scramble - Peak 7552

Trip

Alpine Scramble - Peak 7552

LARCHES!!! A non-technical peak above Cutthroat Pass off of the PCT

  • Strenuous 3, Technical 2
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 12.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,800 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 7,552 ft
  • Pace: 2.5 mph trail pace

Larches galore! There will be plenty of golden larches as we approach Cutthroat Pass and all around the pass area. We will hike the PCT north from Rainy Pass up to Cutthroat Pass, then hike cross country up to the summit, which will be non-technical. We may take more time to explore the ridge south of the pass area if we have time before the hike out.

We will be at a moderate and steady pace on the approach hike, but take enough time to enjoy the larches and views and take photos once we get up into the good stuff. This will be a long day due to the mileage of the hike but also the 3 hour drive each way. Please do not have any evening plans and be okay with a late return. I may even look to stop for dinner on the way home in Marblemount, so we will organize carpools accordingly.

If there is no parking at Rainy Pass due to crowds (hopefully being a weekday there will be parking), plan B will be to approach via Cutthroat Lake but that will add 2 miles round trip and 400 feet of gain plus a slightly longer drive, so chances of summiting would be less likely due to time constraints.

The forecast is looking decent, but if that changes the trip will be relocated or cancelled.
