Mount Howard & Mount Mastiff

Trip

Alpine Scramble - Mount Howard

We will attempt Mount Howard only (no Mastiff to Howard traverse). Even without the traverse, the trip will be an extremely strenuous scramble but with spectacular views on the top. Howard is a Smoot too! Mount Washington (Olympic area) will be our back-up if smoke is bad. Please read the leader note's section before requesting leader permission.

Mount Washington (Olympic) is our back-up destination in case the smoke is bad, or the weather doesn't cooperate.

You must be prepared and fit for a LONG and TIRING day with a lot of elevation gain and loss. Also, the final mile to summit is Class 2-3 climbing/scrambling with exposure. Do not sign up if you are not confident in your conditioning and your capacity for type 2 fun. We won't go crazy fast, but we will go at a moderate but steady pace with short breaks as needed. Pacing: all day, moderate pace (averaging 1000 ft per hour). Expect 10-14 hrs car to car.
