This session will be mostly an engaging lecture, but it will also include some time for open Q&A and a couple of short small group break-out sessions.

Being a leader or an instructor in the outdoors is most importantly about risk management, and risk management is most importantly about judgment and decision making skills. Unfortunately, our brains are wired in such a way that we are all innately prone to making errors of judgment, and those errors can lead to poor decisions. This session unpacks some of the brain science that leads to “cognitive illusions.” You will walk away with an increased awareness of potential blind spots, and this increased awareness will immediately make you a better risk manager in the field.
