Mountaineers leader and Conservation Northwest staff member Kurt Hellman unpacks the intersection of regional wildlife conservation issues and human-powered outdoor recreation. As a Mountaineers Basic Alpine course assistant and the Wildlife Recreation Coexistence Manager for Conservation Northwest, Kurt brings his expertise and passion for respectful and low impact recreation to the 2025-2026 Leadership Development Series. Join us for this seminar combing both theory and practice to learn about wildlife issues in priority Mountaineers landscapes, as well as best practices for accounting for recreation impacts on wildlife and making your Mountaineers-led trips and personal adventures wildlife-smart.

Presenter

Kurt Hellmann leads Conservation Northwest’s Wildlife-Recreation Coexistence program, where he bridges wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation through advocacy, public outreach, and education. His work aims to reduce recreation's impact on sensitive wildlife and landscapes while promoting sustainable access to the outdoors. Kurt fuels his passion for protecting wild places by trail running, rock climbing, biking, and backcountry skiing across Washington’s diverse landscapes.
