Introduction to Backpacking

Hands on course for new backpackers that has two class sessions, a demonstration day plus a field trip

If you are new to backpacking or perhaps a returning backpacker who has not been out for some time, this course will prepare you to safely and confidently enjoy overnight or multiple day routes. Experienced leaders will provide instruction and coaching on: 

  • Basics of trip planning and route selection
  • Gear -how to select without going broke, and how to use it
  • Nutrition and Fitness
  • Leave No Trace wilderness ethics
  • and much more

Course Graduation Requirements
Attend Lecture 1 and Lecture 2, Gear Demonstration Day, one Mountaineers backpacking trip (a course field trip could fulfill this) and one additional backpacking trip (personal or Mountaineers).  Also, complete a stewardship day of your choice.

Field Trip Dates*:
May 5-6 (Saturday-Sunday): Lower Lena Lake
May 17-18 (Thursday-Friday): Ozette Triangle
May 19-20 (Saturday-Sunday): Packwood Lake

*You are not required to participate in the scheduled field trips.   You may  go on any official Mountaineers backpacking trip that fits in your schedule to fulfill your graduation requirement.  Field trips are a great opportunity we provide for you to learn and share with fellow classmates.

Required Equipment

There are no equipment requirements for the lectures, but there will be for the Gear Demonstration Day and Field Trip.  Equipment requirements will be covered in detail at Lecture 1 giving ample time to prepare.
