What inspired you to become a Leader for The Mountaineers?
I love getting outside and sharing that experience with others. It's fun getting to know people with so many different backgrounds, ages, and interests. Recently, I hiked with an 88-year-old...what an inspiration!
What is your favorite trip that you've led for The Mountaineers?
Mount Townsend. A great workout, excellent views, and wonderful company. I still get together with some of the hikers I met on that trip for spontaneous adventures.
How has your leadership style evolved as you've gained experience?
I've learned to relax and enjoy the journey and company along the way more. It's easy to focus so much on every detail of the trip that it takes some of the fun out of it. As the leader, it's important to have fun, too!
What learning experiences you can share with us, such as take-aways from a close call or a near miss?
It's important to gauge participants' comfort levels throughout the trip. Last summer, I spotted a bear on the hillside while leading a group. While I was comfortable with continuing to our destination, I could tell that the group was uneasy. I made the decision to turn back and stop at a different lake where everyone would feel at ease. Although nobody wanted to speak up at the time of the decision, they all thanked me afterwards.
What advice do you have for aspiring leaders in The Mountaineers community?
As a leader, you will grow with experience, but never stop learning. Stay open to other ways of doing things and you might surprise yourself with what you learn. Also, have fun!
Is there aNYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I hike with my baby almost daily and lead Mountaineers hikes with her a few times a month. We hope to see you out on the trail!
