Basic Sea Kayaking Course - Tacoma 2020

*REGISTRATION FOR THIS CLASS IS CLOSED, DUE TO COVID19. PLEASE CHECK BACK TO REGISTER FOR SPRING 2021

The Mountaineers' once-a-year class is loaded with practical information, hands-on education, introduction to kayak gear, and an emphasis on paddling safety. Learn the basic paddling strokes, how to get back in your boat when you go over, basic trip planning & navigation, and how to recognize & avoid dangerous situations. No prior kayaking knowledge or experience is required to participate in the course.

Participants should be moderately physically fit. Examples of this would mean the ability to lift 25 lbs over your head, walk briskly for one hour, lift yourself to the side of the pool without using a ladder, and have the flexibility to sit upright with legs on the floor in front of you. Successful completion and enjoyment of the course is reliant on this minimal level of fitness. PLEASE READ THROUGH ENTIRE DESCRIPTIONS AND THE REQUIRED EQUIPMENT BEFORE REGISTERING FOR THE CLASS.

The course consists of one classroom session, one pool session, two open water sessions and two student paddles. The classroom session will be held on Saturday, May 2,2020 from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm at the Tacoma Mountaineers Clubhouse, 2302 N 30th St. Tacoma, WA 98403. The pool session (including a swim test) will be held from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm on Sunday, May 3 at the Peninsula High School pool in Gig Harbor. Lake sessions will be held from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday/Sunday May 16/17 at American Lake in Lakewood. To graduate, students must attend all the above listed sessions and complete two club-sponsored student paddles of at least four hours duration by September 30, 2020.
