Pioneers

Pioneers is a year round program designed for 7-9 year olds.

Family-driven, Staff-supported

Our Pioneers program provides youth ages 7-9 and their parents/guardians with the opportunity to get outside once a month. Pioneers is designed to expose youth to a variety of outdoor activities and have fun! Participants will have the chance to climb, hike, paddle, explore, and learn how to be safe in the outdoors. The group will be supported by Mountaineers staff, but parents will be expected to play an active role in planning and even leading some trips.* Staff will provide opportunities for parents to advance their own outdoor skills as well as learn key skills for leading kids safely in the outdoors. This program will focus on skill-building for both youth and adults, and on building an outdoor community. Note: Pioneers membership is $675 in total for the year. A $75 deposit is required and the remainder can be paid in full or in monthly installments.

*Note that while  parents/guardians are expected to be active participants in the club, there is plenty of flexibility so that youth can participate in a trip even if a parent/guardian can't make it.

TYPICAL OUTINGS

Activities: Hiking, Rock Climbing, Cross-Country Skiing, Rafting, Snowshoeing, Camping, Kayaking, Exploring - anything you want!

HOW DO OUTINGS WORK?

Outings are organized by staff and parent volunteers and chaperoned by at least two adults. Outings range from single-day hikes, to paddles, and climbs. Some trips have a maximum capacity, while others are open to as many youth and adults as want to attend.

How do I know this is the right program for my family?

Pioneers is a club and requires a time commitment and monthly dues of $67.50/family. In return, members gain a community of outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy spending time learning skills together. As families grow through our programs, lifelong friendships are built. When graduates of our teen program come home from college, they meet up with other Mountaineers friends to go hiking, backpacking and climbing. This program is just the beginning.

In order to build a cohesive community, Pioneers registration is available only in September and January.

HOW DO I GET MY family INVOLVED in pioneers?

To get involved, first you'll need to sign up for a Family Membership with us. Once you have created your new account, add your kids to your account by clicking on the "Membership" tab and adding a family member. 

Here is an FAQ on that process.

Next, fill out our survey which will help us connect you with the right cohort. Once you've filled out the survey, a staff member will get in touch with you to answer questions and help you get registered. We're looking forward to a great season!

Our Pioneers club is open to all youth aged 7-9, and we welcome new members in September and January (youth must turn 7 by January of the school year in which they join to be eligible).
