Youth Backpacking Skills

The holder of this badge has acquired basic backpacking skills by participating in youth backpacking trips, attending our Mountaineers Adventure Club (MAC) Backpack Skills Bazaar and demonstrating proficiency in basic backpacking skills.

DESCRIPTION OF SKILLS

The holder of this badge has successfully completed our Mountaineers Adventure Club (MAC) Backpack Skill Bazaar  and/or has demonstrated proficiency in the following skills:

  • Water - weight considerations, purification, hydration while exercising
  • Stoves - set up, fuel management, general cooking considerations
  • Ultralight - intro to gear and packing
  • Medical/Clothing - sock focus, med kits, blister prevention (this is NOT a substitute for the required WFA)
  • Packing - how to pack a backpack 

WHAT DOES THIS BADGE ALLOW ME TO DO?

This badge is a means of demonstrating your skill proficiency with backpacking  in conjunction with a WFA certification and completion of the MAC conditioning hike series. Leaders of more advanced trips (such as section hikes of the PCT or other longer distance hikes) may require this badge.  

HOW DO I GET THIS BADGE?

To earn this badge you must attend the backpacking bazaar meeting and have your understanding of the associated topics checked by volunteer leaders.
