Mentor Backpack Leader
This badge recognizes backpack leaders who are willing to mentor upcoming backpack leaders.
DESCRIPTION OF SKILLS
Desired Mentor Backpack Leader qualities include:
- A passion for backpacking and developing/empowering future backpack leaders
- Backpacking skills and confidence, as well as flexibility, humility, and the ability to be taught
- Clear, kind, respectful, and constructive communication
- Strong situational awareness and safety-first mindset
- Emotional intelligence
To be awarded this badge, one must:
- Have led 3 successful backpack trips with The Mountaineers
- Be familiar with org-wide backpacking standards
- Be willing to mentor at least one backpacking trip or new backpack leader per year
(this is not a requirement if life circumstance or no new backpack leaders to mentor prevents)
A mentored backpack includes meeting with the mentee at least once on the phone or in person to plan the trip; actively participating in the trip as a mentor; offering constructive feedback, solutions, or problem solving as needed, and submitting the backpack leader evaluation form to the Backpacking Committee. Mentors are highly encouraged to check in with the mentee after the mentored backpack trip to offer ongoing support.
