This badge represents successful completion of The Backcountry Skiing Course, which teaches necessary skills to safely travel the backcountry for alpine tourers, telemarkers, and (depending on the class being offered) snowboarders of intermediate level or better.

Description of skills

The holder of this badge has successfully completed our Backcountry Skiing Course, and has demonstrated proficiency in the following skills:

  • Necessary equipment and supplies for any backcountry trip
  • Telemark skiing instruction 
  • Avalanche awareness/avoidance 
  • Avalanche rescue and beacon practice 
  • Depending on the course, it may also teach winter camping and emergency shelter-building
