Summer Camp - Teen Adventures: Rock Climbing

Teens age 13-17 join us for a multi-day climbing and camping adventure! All experience levels welcome.

Teens age 13-17 have the chance to join us for teen adventure camp! Participants will spend one day at our Program Center in Tacoma learning climbing basics, such as top-roping, belaying, rappelling, knots, and anchors. On our second day, we'll pack our bags and head out to the crags for 3 days of outdoor climbing and 2 nights of camping nearby.

This week is open to any skill/experience level of climber. Participants will have a large variety of routes to choose from, so we can accommodate different levels of challenge. Participants may have to hike up to 1 mile and 1,000' of elevation gain with 30 pound packs to reach certain climbing areas.

Skills learned at this camp will differ based on camper's levels of experience and desired challenge, but may include:


Mock-leading on bolts

Leading on bolts


Cleaning a sport anchor

Lead belaying

Anchor building

Rescue skills

Program Requirements

This program has no scheduled activities.

Required Equipment

Below is a list of equipment that will be needed for the overnight trip. Please keep in mind that The Mountaineers can provide most equipment if needed! Please contact the trip leader with 1-2 weeks advance notice for any gear you would like to borrow.

  • Large backpack or duffel bag to fit your gear for transportation
  • Medium large backpack to carry gear to the crag (minimum 30 liter capacity. This can also be the large backpack from the line item above.)
  • Sleeping pad
  • Sleeping bag
  • Athletic shoes for hiking
  • Personal toiletries (toothbrush, hairbrush, etc)
  • Personal First Aid Kit
  • Headlamp 
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Water bottles (minimum 2 liters capacity)
  • Food (lunch for first day, plus personal snacks)
  • Mess kit (bowl, utensils, mug, if needed)
  • Toilet paper/hand sanitizer
  • Clothing (non-cotton please)
    • Rain jacket
    • Insulating layer, such as a puffy jacket or fleece
    • Wool or poly base layers
    • Hiking pants (mandatory 1 pair long pants. Optional to bring shorts as well)
    • 1 long sleeve shirt and one short sleeve shirt 
    • Changes of underwear
    • Wool socks (minimum 3 pairs)
    • Hat
    • Gloves
  • Bug Spray (recommended)
  • Camera (or phone)
  • These are things staff will provide, but if you have your own you are welcome to bring:
