This is part of the Tacoma DP Kayaking weekend.  I have reserved the group site at DP for Saturday and Sunday nights (was not available Friday night). If you will be staying at the group site you must register for the camping portion, and pay a $30 fee to cover camping fees  here.  If you are not staying at the group site, then there are no fees associated with the event...enjoy.

This clinic will include one evening of zoom lecture covering those concepts so we can maximize our on-water time.  A list of videos (approximately 90 minutes total) will be sent to participants (approximately a week in advance) to watch prior to the on-water day.

One day of on-water and on-beach instruction regarding incident management and prevention.  Clinic will cover multiple self and assisted re-entries, use of short and long tow systems, and incident scenarios. This clinic will meet the requirements for the Incident Management clinic for the Intermediate Sea Kayaker Badge.

Be sure to read the required equipment list, and ask instructor for advice before purchasing anything specifically for the clinic.

The clinic is open to the 2026 students, but they must have at lease 2 student paddles.  This clinic does NOT qualify as a student paddle. Participation in all aspects of the clinic will be "challenge by choice" meaning a participant may opt out if they are uncomfortable with the request.

I HIGHLY recommend students take this clinic in combination with the Eddies and Currents clinic offered the following day.

Open to mountaineers members only.

As per all of my trips and clinics, please no alcohol or recreational pharmaceuticals.

Bowman Bay, Deception Pass State Park, ready to paddle at 9 AM. Discover pass is required.

Mandatory Zoom meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 26 between 7 and 9 PM.

Required Equipment

Required Equipment

You'll want everything you would take on a typical day paddle.  The mountaineers standard paddling essentials. You do not need a chart, fire starter, or compass.

Sea Kayak with full perimeter deck lines and sealed front and rear hatches (flotation).

Properly fitting Coast Guard approved PFD with attached whistle.

Bilge pump with flotation.

Paddle that floats.

Properly fitting spray skirt.

Dry suit with suitable thermal protection clothing.

Helmet; prefer kayaking helmet, but some use a bicycle or snow sports helmet.

Spare clothes in dry bag, lunch and water, snacks for on-water, paddle float.

Recommended; Kayaking gloves, handheld vhf marine radio, spare paddle, emergency shelter

Short (60") and long (25-50 ft) tow system. Long tow needs a quick release buckle, carabiner without teeth, a float on the line,  stuff sack sufficient to quickly stow the line, and preferably a shock absorber.

Discover Pass or paid daily parking at Bowman Bay. I don't believe staying in the group campsite will allow you to use a "receipt" as a parking pass.

Note; kayak trailers are no longer able to be parked at the Bowman Bay parking lot.
