Spring Hiking Series: May Hikes - Marmot Pass & Buckhorn Mountain

*** Trip initially open to Spring Hiking Students. Trip will open for registration to all Mountaineers 7 to 10 days prior to the hike date. *** This is a challenging, beautiful hike to Marmot Pass.

  • Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 12.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,600 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 6,000 ft
  • Pace: 1.8-2.2 mph

Please note hike pace. This is a moderately difficult, but beautiful, hike in the Buckhorn Wilderness. At this time of year, there may still be snow toward the top, so it's best to bring microspikes. We will  hike through old growth forest, passing Shelter Rock at ~2.75 miles where we can take a break and filter water, if needed. After Shelter Rock, we will continue to climb. We will pass Camp Mystery, and soon reach a high meadow that has marmots (if we're lucky) sunning themselves on rocks. From the meadow, we will climb up to Marmot Pass. Here, we will eat lunch and enjoy the views before heading back the way we came.

This is a hike that starts out with moderate elevation gain, but gradually gets steeper as we go. As of early May, there is still snow for the last mile; however, if the sky is clear, it is possible to see all five of Washington's stratovolcanoes!

A Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is required. There is a vault bathroom at the trailhead.

Meet at the Trailhead at 8:45. Start hike at 9 am.
