Escape into quiet wilderness on this scenic winter hike along the Taylor River. We’ll travel an old logging road through lush second-growth forest, crossing multiple creeks and passing moss-covered boulders while enjoying the constant sound of rushing water and birdsong.
The trail is relatively flat for much of the route, making it a great winter option, but expect numerous creek crossings, muddy sections, and potentially slippery rocks—especially with February water levels. Trekking poles are strongly recommended.
Our destination is the spectacular Otter Falls, where water cascades nearly 1,200 feet down a granite face into tiny Lipsy Lake before draining into the Taylor River. Although only about 500 feet of the falls are visible from the viewing area, the scale and power of the waterfall make this a memorable turnaround and lunch spot before retracing our route.
Some short sections of cross-country travel are required near the falls, and caution is essential near water and steep terrain.
