Climbing Course

Sport Climbing

Interested in transitioning from the climbing gym to real rock? Want to solidify or refresh newly acquired rock climbing skills? Want to develop new skills or push your climbing up a grade or two? If so, this course is for you.

The Tacoma Sport Climbing Course is intended to support students in the development of skills necessary to safely lead and belay single-pitch routes on bolts, both indoors and outdoors. The course covers all skills required for a student to transition from the classroom to the crag on their own, and includes ample opportunities for instructors to assess whether students are ready for that transition.

This course is open to climbers of all ability levels! However, you should already be comfortable with the mechanics of top-rope belaying; in addition, you stand to gain the most from this course if you are already fairly comfortable with at least 5.8 in the gym. If you have any questions about what that means or about the course in general, please e-mail course leaders.

The course also examines other systems and practices crucial to outdoor sport climbing, such as setting up anchors for top-roping a route, cleaning anchors, lowering or rappelling down a route, and being a responsible Mountaineers member in activities in the outdoors and at the crag (LNT principles, rock and route evaluation, etc.).
