Marine Coastal Navigation

The Marine Coastal Navigation course is designed for sailors interested in learning the skills need to determine your position on the water, plot a course, and use navigation aids.

The Marine Coastal Navigation course will consist of three classroom sessions, hands on exercises using charts, parallel rules and other navigation tools, plus one on-the-water day sail in which you will practice the skills you learned in class.    

Note that the in-class sessions are 9/25, 10/2 and 10/16 with the on-the-water practical session either the weekend of 10/4-5 or 10/11-12 depending on weather. 

Place: Seattle Program Center, Cascade Room 

Time: 6:30-8:30pm

After completing the course, you will have learned:

  • Tools of the Trade - Paper charts, compass, difference between true and magnetic north, plotting aids, computer-based charts;
  • Dead Reckoning - Using speed, time and distance traveled to plan a route;
  • Piloting - Using known landmarks, chart information and currents to determine and track your position;
  • Basics of Computer-based Navigation - Introduction to use of GPS and electronic charting software at home and onboard.
