Boot Camp - Union Bay Natural Area

Are you a Seattle Wilderness (off-trail) Navigation Course student wanting to practice your compass skills before you get to the Heybrook field trip? If so then this hands‑on Boot Camp is for you! This is a great opportunity to practice and build confidence measuring and plotting bearings with your map and compass. Because this is a sensitive wetland, groups are limited to 4 within each time bloc, sessions are 2 hours. In order to attend this Boot Camp you need to have first completed activities #1, #2, and #3 of the Off-trail Navigation course.

Topics include:
 
Using a single back-bearing combined with a handrail to deduce your exact point position.
Measuring and plotting a bearing to locate distant objectives in the field.      
4 ways to orient the map.
5 ways to make a 180º error.
Triangulation.

We will meet at the Center for Urban Horticulture, 3501 NE 41st St, Seattle. Exact start times will be sent prior to the Boot Camp. Please arrive a few minutes early so that you are ready to start at your allotted time. Please allow 2 hours to complete the Boot Camp. The Union Bay Natural Area requires visitors to be masked.

Required Equipment

A map will be provided. Bring your compass. At instructor discretion, you may be issued a Suunto MC-2 for group continuity. Be prepared for rain. Wear good walking/hiking shoes. Be prepared to walk through (not around) an occasional puddle on the trail. We will mostly be on a flat gravel/dirt trail.
