To sign up:

Before you can sign up for this Workshop as a student, you first need to sign up and pay for the "Wilderness Navigation Course " (the link to that course is to the right).  Instructors do not need to pay.

The prerequisite activities include completing the eLearning Workshop (activity #1) and GPS Online Module (activity #2) activities.  This workshop roster will be finalized 5 days before the start, so ineligible students will be removed from the roster to allow those eligible students from the wait list to join.

Workshop Summary

See the main Course Page and/or the Curriculum Summary for more detail on this activity.  The link to the main course is to the right, which also lists the Course Materials

Please come prepared. After completing the two Online components, you should be prepared with the following:

  • Your compass with the correct declination set
  • Gaia GPS App Loaded on your smartphone
  • Your smartphone fully charged
  • Download the workshop GPX data from Gaia folder
  • Bring hard copy maps of Heybrook (USGS Baring, USGS Index)
  • Read a Swiss Alps Case Study
  • Bring a headlamp. It helps for the outdoor portion of the exercise, and also helps for reading fine details on your map.
  • Dress for the outdoors.
  • Food to eat. You are welcome to bring food to eat during the Workshop, but keep it simple.
  • Bring a sharp pencil (mechanical pencils work great).
  • Bring paper for taking notes.

You'll need 2 maps for this workshop, and they will also be used in our field trip.  It is the USGS Baring and USGS Index maps described on the main Course Page. (link to the right).  You must purchase these maps in advance, and the best source is the Online Bookstore at  See the course page for the links.

Rescheduling or cancellation:

Registration closes 5 days before the Workshop.  If you must cancel or reschedule then please do so as soon as you can to open room for people on the wait list.  After registration closes you can make changes by contacting the course leader or by contacting Member Services.

Come prepared to instruct students who likely have a wide range of experience:

  •  Review your "Instructor Workshop Packet."  If you haven't obtained one via email about a week before the activity, please email the activity leader.  We will also have paper copies at the workshop.
  •  Review the "Student Field Trip" and "Instructor Field Trip" packets as well, to help you answer questions about the upcoming field trip. The student version  is available in "Course Materials" on the course page.
  • Review the GPS Online Module and prepare your own smartphone with Gaia GPS and the tracks and waypoints for the workshop.
  • Bring your compass and GPS.  You don't necessarily need to bring your own maps, but it can help.
