Field trip: Introduction to the Natural World Course

Field Trip 3 - Seattle Naturalists Intro Natural World Course - Golden Gardens Park

Golden Gardens has all of the intertidal zones, from the high tide rocks to the low tide pools with crabs and sea stars. A sandy and cobblestone beach plus mudflats offer even more environments to explore.

Meet at 10:45 am at the Golden Gardens Wetlands/ponds at the far north end of the park. Restrooms are available in the Bathhouse.

We'll go over tide pool etiquette before proceeding to the beach

A -3.7 ft low tide is at ~1:13. We'll discuss the various intertidal zones and then explore together to see the differences in the marine life to be found in each. Beach Naturalists from the Seattle Aquarium will be present to help us and other members of the public appreciate all there is to see in this area.  The Puget Sound Beach Field Guide found on the Aquarium website is useful

  • Detailed information will be provided to those on the roster approximately 3 days before the trip
  • Recommended gear: poles and old sneakers for walking on slippery cobblestones, shorts or pants that can be rolled up.  We will be walking in the water, sometimes knee-deep and more. Rubber boots are also possible. Sandals/Tevas are not recommended because of sharp rocks and barnacles

The New Beachcomber's Guide to the Pacific Northwest by J. Duane Sept is wonderful!
