From the trailhead, we will take the Upper Dungeness Trail for about 1 mile, then we'll take a right on the Royal Basin trail. After a further 6 miles we will reach the shores of Royal Lake. We will take a short break at the lake before making our final push of less than 1 mile up to Royal Basin. There we will take a longer break to eat lunch and enjoy the commanding views of the surrounding mountains and the blue tarns in the basin. Hikers have the option of a quick swim or foot soak in the cold waters of the lake in the upper basin. We will retrace our steps back to the trailhead.
We will depart at 6AM from the group campsite in Dungeness Recreation Area campground, the site of the CHS Olympics Campout. It is about a 1 hour and 25 minute drive from the campground to the trailhead. Those planning to meet at the trailhead should be there by 7:30AM.
The hike will start at the Upper Dungeness Trailhead here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Upper+Dungeness+Trailhead/@47.8784906,-123.1781364,14.08z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x548fd1e6fd9ffc0d:0x22c9c7490406e526!8m2!3d47.8775433!4d-123.1373736!16s%2Fg%2F11bx1yz8qg?entry=ttu
