We’ll meet in Mazama in the trailhead parking lot behind the Mazama Public House at TBD: https://maps.app.goo.gl/8p7Pz2vtjn8Fm21K6
We have to drive Hart Pass Road (https://www.fs.usda.gov/wildflowers/regions/Pacific_Northwest/HartsPass/index.shtml) which is a narrow gravel road. It is better that we carpool, preferable in 4WD/AWD vehicles with high clearance. I have a Subaru Outback and can take three passengers. This drive will take an hour.
I’m staying at the Hotel Rio Vista (https://hotelriovista.com/) in Winthrop on Friday and Saturday nights. If you wish to stay in the area then you’re responsible for organizing your own accommodation. If there are others staying in Winthrop on Saturday night, then I’ll organize a group dinner. For those not staying over, car pools from the Seattle area can be arranged when I send the Hello Hiker email.

We’ll hike the PCT from Harts Pass area to Grasshopper Peak and back. The hike starts at the Brown Bear PCT trailhead: https://maps.app.goo.gl/xcSvYVm8bCEwooKy6. This WTA trail description describes the hike: https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/grasshopper-pass
I plan to take the boot/scramble path up Tatie Peak on the way out but those that prefer not to can follow the PCT, and we’ll re-group at the next pass. When we get to Grasshopper Pass I plan to take the boot path for the 0.4 hike to Grasshopper Peak (7125 high point in the WTA description); those that prefer not to can relax at Grasshopper Pass and admire the views!
Depending on the time we return to the cars and how we feel, after the hike we can drive the 0.7 mile roundtrip to Slate Peak Lookout for additional 360 degree views.
