Basic Backpacking Gear Practice Trip - Mountaineers Seattle Program Center

An optional in-town practice backpacking trip that gives students an opportunity to do an end-to-end test of their backpacking kit.

  • Easy
  • Mileage: 2.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 50 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 - 2.0 mph

Seattle Program Center.  Students will be assigned meeting times ranging from 8:00am - 9:30am and will return to the Program Center 3 - 4 hours later.

Before their student backpacking trip, all students should set up their tents, fire up their stoves, filter some water, and walk around a bit with their backpacks packed as if for an actual overnight trip.  For students whose living situation does not allow them to do some or all of these things, the optional Gear Practice Trip is an opportunity to do so in a safe environment with other students and a pair of leader/instructors.  It is open to all students who wish to participate.

Small groups of students led by a pair of leader/instructors will meet at the Seattle Program Center, hike through Magnuson Park with their overnight packs about 20 minutes to an area near Kite Hill.  They will set up camp, pump water from Lake Washington, cook and eat a meal, then pack up and hike back to the Program Center.

Students will be assigned to a specific group in advance, and the start times of the groups will be staggered to avoid congestion at the Program Center and to comply with COVID-19 guidelines.   Groups will meet at assigned times ranging from 8:00am - 9:30am and will return to the Program Center about 3 - 4 hours later.

The trip will take place rain or shine.
