CLASS Overview

This is a 2.5-hour in-person class that teaches CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).  It includes hands-only CPR, "full" CPR with rescue breathing, and a discussion of their usefulness and limitations in various situations.

The training is a mix of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on skills practice using  CPR mannequins and AED training devices. Instruction is provided by our training partner the Medic One Foundation. All activities take place indoors.

On successful completion students will receive a Mountaineers CPR Course badge as well as a Heartsaver CPR AED certification card from the American Heart Association.  Both are good for two years.

Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

About CPR Training ANd The Mountaineers

CPR is a lifesaving skill widely taught worldwide.  It is relevant to all urban, frontcountry, and backcountry activities as well as to daily life.

Among Mountaineers activities CPR is currently required only for Urban Walks leaders.  However,  leaders and participants in other Mountaineers activities may also consider taking CPR electively to improve their ability to deal with accidents such as drowning, asphyxiation, and lightning strikes.

Some Wilderness First Aid (WFA) classes include CPR whereas others do not.  (The industry standard for WFA recommends CPR but does not require it.)  Taking CPR separately can be useful for people who want to know CPR but graduated from a WFA class that did not include it.
