CLASS Overview

This is a 3.5-hour in-person class consisting of 1 hour of basic First Aid training and 2.5 hours of CPR/AED training.

The Adult First Aid (AFA) portion of the class is intended for urban and front country locations where emergency services are expected to arrive within a few minutes to a maximum of about an hour. It consists of basic but essential techniques to address life threatening injuries until emergency services arrive.

The CPR portion of the class teaches CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).  It includes both hands-only CPR and "full" CPR with rescue breathing, as well as a discussion of their usefulness and limitations in various urban, frontcountry, and backcountry situations.

The training is a mix of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on skills practice using CPR mannequins, AED training devices, and basic First Aid supplies typically found in a public First Aid station. Instruction is provided by our training partner the Medic One Foundation. All activities take place indoors.

On successful completion students will receive a Mountaineers Adult First Aid (AFA) and CPR course badges as well as a Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED certification card from the American Heart Association.  All are good for two years.

This class includes only Adult First Aid and CPR/AED.  It does not include the treatment of children or infants.

Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

Trigger Warning

The training videos include very brief animated depictions of a mass shooting event and a public mass casualty event caused by an explosion. The events appear on screen for only a few seconds and are not the primary subject of the videos.

About AFA & CPR ANd The Mountaineers

CPR is a lifesaving skill widely taught worldwide. It is relevant to all urban, frontcountry, and backcountry activities as well as to daily life.

Among Mountaineers activities CPR is currently required only for Urban Walks leaders. However, leaders and participants in other Mountaineers activities may also consider taking CPR electively to improve their ability to deal with accidents such as drowning, asphyxiation, and lightning strikes.

Some Wilderness First Aid (WFA) classes include CPR whereas others do not. (The industry standard for WFA recommends CPR but does not require it.) Taking a separate CPR class can be useful for people who want to know CPR but graduated from a WFA class that did not include it.

This AFA + CPR class satisfies the First Aid requirement to become a Mountaineers Urban Walks leader.
