The goal of this evaluation is to enable climbers with outdoor sport climbing experience to obtain equivalency so they can lead single pitch sport routes on Mountaineers rock climbing trips (read about types of Mountaineers climbs), instruct with sport climbing courses, and pursue Sport Climb Leadership.

Skills covered include:

  • Partner checks
  • Route risk assessment
  • Belaying
  • Rope management
  • Equipment
  • Clipping
  • Sport anchors
  • Lead climbing
  • Clean to lower transitions (while remaining redundant through both anchor bolts and without going off belay)

Rappelling, trad climbing, and multipitch climbing will not be covered.

Candidates should have at least six months of outdoor lead climbing experience and have set up and cleaned at least several anchors in a variety of sport climbing settings.

For those interested in helping instruct, please request leader permission and note your sport climbing training and experience.

Successful candidates for the Sport Climbing Course badge will instill confidence that they can safely lead single pitch sport routes, clean routes, and set up top rope anchors for others with limited supervision from a Mountaineers Climb Leader.

TBD. Holding both Saturday and Sunday. The evaluation will be held on the better weather day. Expect to meet at 9am at the parking lot.
