Community Practice Session - Mountaineers Seattle Program Center

The focus will be on personal movement on rope on low-angle, high-angle, and boulder terrain. Gear to practice with will be available.

  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)

We will meet at the North Wall at the Seattle Mountaineers Program Center at 1:00 and go until 4:00 RAIN OR SHINE. Hopefully it will rain and we can practice in wet conditions to mimic canyon conditions.

The focus of this session will be on reinforcing proper rappel technique and overcoming poor rappelling technique. The skills we will be targeting are: loading the device facing the anchor, loading the device facing down canyon, the pre-rappel check, rappel posture, hand placement, rappel commands, adding body friction, adding device friction pre-rappel, adding and removing friction mid-rappel, switch-hand braking, dominant hand bracing, hands-free lock off, sympathetic movement on rappel, and fireman belaying. If there is time we will move into ascending, knot-passing and any other requests.

Technical Practice Sessions are a peer learning environment. No formal training is provided, and participants must have the pre-requisite training to participate. Participants are encouraged to bring books or materials to reference.
