Rock and Snow Skills Test

Field trip: Alpine Scrambling Equivalency

Rock and Snow Skills Test - Alpental Ski Area

A one-day skills practice and evaluation field trip to hone our steep snow and rock skills for people applying for Scramble equivalency.

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,000 ft
  • Pace: Moderate

TBD

Our destination will likely be changed should current weather or snow conditions dictate.  We will be less focused on gaining a summit of something but instead on practicing our snow travel skills, including walking in balance, self belay, self arrest, and glissade.  Our main goal will be to get these firmly into our "muscle memory" so that participants will be fully able to participate safely in scramble trips.   If we are lucky enough to find any rock poking up under the snow, we will move about on that.  We will however be sure to demonstrate and practice the Mountaineers protected downclimb strategy.
