Field trip: Alpine Scrambling Course

Conditioning Hike - West Tiger Mountain No. 3

Conditioning trip to an I-90 region hiking summit (Tiger #3 using the Nook Trail)

  • Moderate/Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 5.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,100 ft

Meet at the parking area outside the gate of the parking lot,  I90, exit 20. They close the gate at sunset and you don't want to get locked in.

Parking outside the gate does not require a Discover Pass.

Meeting time 5:30pm.

We will be coming down in the dark, be sure to bring a working headlamp.

Please call if you are running late, I'll only wait around a few minutes for no shows, so if your like 10 minutes late you might miss the hike.

This is an early season conditioning hike to start getting in shape for the upcoming season, don't pack too much weight for the first few hikes. Do bring your 10 essentials, some water and maybe a snack for the summit.

For a good workout, expect that we'll be moving a moderate pace with little or no stopping on the way up.

We will be hiking regardless of the weather, so be aware of the forecast and dress accordingly.

This trip is one of a series of optional hikes for scramble course students to work on their conditioning, explore the foothills peaks and become better acquainted with the other students and scramble community members. These conditioners are also a great way to test out your gear in the field.

This trip is not a scramble, does not count toward graduation and is optional, however we strongly suggest that you participate in as many of these conditioning hikes as possible.

The leader(s) are scramble course graduates and instructors, but not necessarily official scramble leaders.  Sign-up is limited to students from the current year's scramble course.

Depending on our ability to recruit leaders for these hikes, there might be more than one hike listed per day OR the group might be split into two separate parties, one faster and one slower.

Destinations might be one of these locations:

  • Mt Si - via the standard trail.
  • Mt Si - via the "old" trail that starts at the Little Si trailhead
  • Mt Tenerife
  • Mailbox Peak
  • Mt Washington
  • Rattlesnake Mountain
  • Tiger Mountain 1 from Issaquah High School (3000' gain/5 hours)
  • Others?

Required Equipment

Required Equipment

This is not a scramble, so helmets, ice axes and harnesses are not required however for conditioning you should carry all the gear you will be taking on a scramble trip. This includes helmet, ice axe and hasty harness.

Everything else you would bring on a regular scramble course is required including the 10 essentials, rain gear and extra clothes.

This is a great time to test our the boots you are planning to use during the scramble course for fit and comfort. If you do not have those boots yet sturdy hiking boots will suffice for now.
