Beginner oriented classroom and pool based course in learning "rotational" boat control in the form of rolling and bracing. Pool sessions provide individual instructors.
Course will consist of 3 pool sessions plus one optional dry land session. Pool sessions will take place at the River Ridge High School pool (in eastern Lacey) starting at 4pm. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to help get boats into the pool building.
An optional discussion session will take place at John Dunlap's house during the week prior to the first pool session. Once the roster is set we will collectively pick a day that works best for the most students.
We will try to provide kayaks that are easy to roll for those students who have large, wide, or flat bottomed boats. Please talk to the course leaders before the first pool session about your particular kayak.
Priority for this course is given to Olympia Branch members. Members from other branches are welcome if we have space. Space will be held for Olympia members until November 6th, after which others can register. Please email John Dunlap if you are interested in enrolling. All registrations REQUIRE prior instructor approval.
No course badge is awarded for completion of this course, however the Mountaineers offers a kayak rolling skill badge. Our goal is to help you develop the skills to earn this badge. More information about the Kayak Rolling badge can be found here.
This course has no scheduled activities.
PFD (Life jacket)
Booties or other foot protection
Nose plugs or face mask - not required by many people find them very useful
Kayak and sprayskirt - Prior to class please discuss your boat with the course leader. Some boats are much easier for learning rolling and we can often arrange for a loaner boat if yours is less than ideal. Most people who take this course do own a kayak and you will need frequent access to a kayak to practice after the conclusion of the course.
You must register for this course to see course materials.
