Logistics:
- The qualifier has never been cancelled due to bad weather – consider that a warning
- We’ll be outside all day until we’re done
- Bring food & water – maybe a warm beverage
- Bring rain gear/warm clothes. Muck boots are sometimes more practical than climbing boots.
- You’ll be laying on the ground during the Z-pulley & self arrest exercises — you may want to have a foam pad.
- The geese leave a lot of poop around. Be prepared to clean it off your gear, clothes & hands.
What to expect:
- You will be evaluated on your knowledge as well as your ability to demonstrate, explain and instruct
- All of the stations and required skills are listed in “Intermediate Qualifier – Score Sheet” section of the Intermediate Manual.
- There will be no “gotchas” or surprise tests
- Belays and rescue scenarios take a lot of time
- Prepare for success – practice beforehand pays dividends. It’s not a bad idea to practice with other candidates. Skills are perishable, and remembering the following has sometimes been a challenge:
- Navigation (map & compass)
- Ice axe belays
- Sitting hip belay
- Z pulley
- Carabiner brake rappel
