Traditional Climbing Course

This Course teaches climbers to climb routes with traditional "Trad" gear and trad anchors

Course Outline: Traditional Climbing Course participants will learn to competently lead single pitch traditional (“Trad”) routes in several locations and with various styles and techniques (crack climbing, face climbing, slab, friction, etc.).  Furthermore, participants will learn to build trad anchors, use existing bolts for anchors, and clean sport and trad anchors.  Participants will learn to properly and efficiently place trad gear, gear spacing, and knowledge of fall factors.

Prerequisites: Graduate from Basic Climbing/equivalency or complete Bolts Course/equivalency.  Have experience with lead belaying and rappelling.

Requirements to graduate: In order to graduate from Traditional Climbing Course and earn the Intro to Trad Mountaineers badge, each participant will need to successfully lead at least three trad routes of any rating from bottom to top.  This can be at any field trip.  Also, to build two bomber trad anchors in less than three and five minutes. 

ONLY graduates will be awarded crag trip with leaders to have fun and push themselves.

Required Equipment

Gear Required: Harness; helmet; belay device with locker; nut tool; climbing shoes (purchase comfortable and flat footed shoes you can wear all day); personal anchor with locker; 4 extra locking carabiners; and belay gloves (if you use them).

Optional Gear: This gear is only recommended, but the course has gear it will lend its participants throughout the instruction and field trips.  Do not buy this gear just for the course. Optional gear items are: cams from .3 to 3.0 inches (single); set of nuts (offset preferred); 8-12 alpine draws (singles and doubles) and/or quickdraws; crack gloves (we will teach you to make them too); one roll of climbers tape; and triple sling for anchor and/or 20’ cordelette – 5 to 7 mm tech cord.
