Before you can sign up for this activity as a student, you first need to sign up and pay for the "Wilderness Navigation Course - Foothills" (the link to that course is to the right).  Instructors do not need to pay.

Prerequisites, both the online Map & Compass and GPS activities must be completed before attending the In-Person Workshop.

Before you Arrive
Please come prepared. After completing the two Online components, you should be prepared with the following:

  • Gaia GPS App Loaded on Device
  • Recorded at least one track yourself
  • Recorded at least one waypoint
  • Device fully charged

Day of Online Workshop

  • Where

  • What to have on hand
    * Computer or tablet with larger screen, quality audio/video and internet access
    * A large flat well lite surface to work on, such as a dinning room table
    * Consider having a headlamp and/or magnifying lens to help with reading map fine details 
    * Sharp pencil(s) - mechanical pencils work great.
    * Paper for taking notes.

  •  Maps
    You will be working with maps. However, at the time of this writing, maps are "to be determined". Registered students will be notified of map requirements as soon as they are finalized.

Rescheduling or cancellation

Online Workshop registration closes the Friday before the Workshop.  If you must cancel or reschedule, please do so as soon as you can to make room for people on the waitlist.  After registration closes you can make changes by contacting the course leader or contacting Member Services.

Instructors
Come prepared to instruct students who likely have a wide range of experience:

  1. Attend or review the Online Workshop Instructor training
  2. Review your "Instructor Workshop Packet."  If you haven't obtained one via email about a week before the activity, please email the activity leader.
  3. Review the "Instructor Field Trip" packets, to help you answer questions about the upcoming field trip. This will be made available to you one week before the Workshop. 
  4. Review the GPS Online Module and prepare your own smartphone with Gaia GPS.
