Field trip: GoHike: Beginner Hiking Course

May Hikes: 3 to 5.5 miles, 300 to 1,250 feet gain - Wallace Falls

Enjoy the gorgeous waterfalls with me at Wallace Falls. Our route will take us through lush forest meandering along the Wallace River. The Middle Falls look out will provide us with a panoramic view of the Skykomish River Valley and in the distance, you may see the Olympic Mountains trailing into the horizon. This hike counts towards your monthly required GoHike course May Trips.

We will do an out and back trip stopping at both the Lower and Middle Falls. There is a picnic area at the Lower Falls that we can stop at either on the way up or way back.

The trailhead is just off the parking lot and near the restrooms. At the beginning of the trail, you can see Mt. Index and Barring Mountain. At the half mile marker, we will encounter a spilt in the trail. We will go through a wooden gate that will lead us to Woody Trail. Following along this trail you will see Wallace River to our right.  We will encounter our first steep climb but no worries as we will slow down and enjoy our trek. Our first big stop will be the picnic area and Lower Wallace falls. We can stop and take pictures, eat a snack, hydrate and enjoy the sounds of the waterfall.

Less than ½ a mile away we will visit the Middle Falls which is our turn around point for our trip. If you thought the Lower Falls view was impressive, wait until you see the Middle Falls. Simply breathtaking! We will stop here for another photo opportunity and snack/hydration break.

The hike back is no less fantastic than the hike up. It is always interesting to see how different a trail can look when you turn around and head out.

My Goals: Have fun, rain or shine!

My Expectations:

  • All are prepared to hike whatever the weather.
  •  Group stays together (to see one another at all times) and supports one another.
  • That we treat one another with respect, compassion and understanding.
  • That you're on time at the parking lot prepared and ready to be social and
  • engaging.

My Style:

  • Hike at a pace comfortable for all.
  • Appreciate nature and pointing out the beauty we see around us.
  • I’m a leader that appreciates engaged participants

This is a very popular hike and we will need to meet early to ensure parking.

Meeting time is 8:15 am by the restrooms and ready to hike by 8:30 am

A Discover Pass is required.

Proceeding from Everett on Hwy 2, approach the city of Gold Bar. Turn left onto 1st Street, then drive .4 miles and take a right onto May Creek Rd (there will be Wallace Falls signage for both turns).

Snake your way up May Creek Rd for 1.3 miles until you reach a Y-junction. Right will take you into Camp Huston, so proceed left and drive up a short path into the Wallace Falls State Park parking lot. The lot is spacious, but can easily fill up on the weekends as the park is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Washington State Parks has a live camera on the parking lot.

Please do not park along the road that accesses the parking area for Wallace Falls State Park.
