Overview

This is the first of several hikes exploring the trails of Olympic National Forest off Hood Canal. Our goal for this hike will be to get outside and enjoy the sights and sounds of the river while returning to the trailhead safely. We will plan to do introductions and orientation at 8:00am, then hit the trail. My hike style is social, but destination-focused and I encourage getting to know your fellow hikers. I am happy to stop for photos and plant identification, but ask that folks keep up with the group. We will hike as a loose group (everyone remains within eyesight) at a pace of 1.5-2.0mph and will plan to stop for a snack at the halfway point. For those who are interested, bring your lunch and we will have a picnic/trailgate at the trailhead following the hike!

Hike description

We’ll begin our hike at the Lower South Fork Skokomish Trailhead and hike in about 2.7 miles. The hike begins with a series of switchbacks and we’ll be getting the majority of our elevation gain out of the way at the start and end of the trail. The middle portion of the hike is much more mellow. The path winds through mossy old growth forest with views of the river.

My expectations

  • Arrive on time and ready to hike.
  • Speak up when you need a break, a party separation, clothing adjustment, or need a pace change.
  • Be supportive of your fellow hikers and look out for one another.
  • Follow Leave No Trace (LNT) principles.
