Field trip: GoHike: Beginner Hiking Course
August Hikes: 4 miles to 7 miles, 600 to 2,000 feet gain - Big Creek Loop
The tour of Hood Canal trails continues! Big Creek Loop is a classic hike through the mossy woods around Lake Cushman. We'll be adding on an extension up to a viewpoint of Lake Cushman, which will bring up to about 7 miles and 1700ft of elevation gain. After the hike, we'll stop at Hoodsport Coffee for some Olympic Mountain Ice Cream! This hike counts toward your monthly required GoHike course August trips.

overview
Our goal for this hike will be to get outside and enjoy the forest while returning to the trailhead as a group. We will plan to do introductions and orientation at 8:00, then hit the trail. My hike style is social, bust destination-focused and I encourage getting to know your fellow hikers. I am happy to stop for photos and plant identification, but ask that folks keep up with the group. We will hike as a loose group (everyone remains within eyesight) at a pace of 1.5-2.0mph depending on how the group is feeling and will plan to stop for a snack at the viewpoint.
Hike description
We'll be hiking Big Creek Loop and adding an extension to the Lake Cushman viewpoint. The extension adds about 800ft of elevation gain. The trail climbs through mossy forest and crosses numerous streams. Poles will be needed for this trip. We should be finished hiking in 5-6 hours including rests and a snack break, so be prepared for a longer day.
Post-Hike Social
After the hike, participants are invited to stop at Hoodsport Coffee Company for coffee and Olympic Mountain Ice Cream. As their shirts say: Will Hike for Olympic Mountain Ice Cream!

- Arrive on time and ready to hike.
- Speak up when you need a break, a party separation, clothing adjustment, or need a pace change.
