  • Pace: 1.5-2 mph

A summer trip up the Duckabush River valley can take one deep into the heart of the Olympics, but spring is an especially lovely time to enjoy its lower reaches.  Beginning as early as April you’ll find an abundance of wildflowers and by June, the native rhododendrons are usually in bloom. Year-round, hikers will enjoy the tranquility and beauty of old growth forest, and a fern and moss lined trail meandering up and down along the rushing river. Breaks in the canopy allow occasional mountain glimpses, there is a fine rock perch for a snack or lunch and a delightful riverfront camp in the Brothers Wilderness where we will spend the night.

We will target a steady relaxed pace of 2 mph, possibly slower uphill. Most of the elevation gain is over “Big Hump” and this is a fine area for wildflowers and photos, so no need to rush. Along the way and throughout our time together your co-leaders will share thoughts on planning, organizing and leading a Mountaineers backpack.  Participants are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas for their mentored trip and, of course, talk gear!

Additional details will be provided to participants.

The trip will be canceled for heavy rain, high wind or dangerous trail conditions. In this instance every effort will be made to substitute a similar trip. If the weather is expected to be marvelous, leaders will discuss options for camping Friday night near the trailhead or extending the fun with an additional hike en route home.
