Conditioning for Hiking and Backpacking - Foothills - 2020

Backpacking & Day Hiking Course

Conditioning for Hiking and Backpacking Level II

RESCHEDULED, NOW COMBINES THE LEVEL I AND LEVEL II MATERIAL INTO ONE COURSE! The goal of this multi-week course is to help participants gain mobility, stability, strength and the endurance needed to hike and backpack with ease while helping to prevent injuries. The course includes indoor instruction on hiking-specific exercises and development of a personal training plan, followed by outdoor training sessions in local parks where you'll practice the exercises and do hill- interval training on trails. In the process you'll improve your cardiovascular endurance and feel better for longer on your hikes and treks.

Conditioning for Hiking and Backpacking  is a multi-week class series  including indoor instruction and development of a personal training plan, and outdoor training sessions in local parks where you'll practice the exercises and do hill- interval training on trails.   To graduate you must attend the first session and at least two of the three other sessions.  Please register for these (below) at the time that you register for the course!

For the first session we will be indoors reviewing and performing Level I hiking/backpacking specific exercises as well as learning and performing Level II exercises.  Teachings will include:

  • Dynamic warm-up for hikers including myofascial release techniques
  • Level I & II core exercises
  • Level I & II lower body exercises
  • Proper hiker’s/backpacker’s cool down
  • Level I & II progression handout of hiking specific exercises
  • Level I & II progression calendar of hiking mileage with backpack weight

You will receive a specialized training plan that will outline proper progression of sets and repetitions for each exercise over a one-month period.  You will also develop a personalized workout calendar to help keep you on track with your pre-season training program.  All exercises taught in the class can be performed at home or outdoors.

During the next three sessions  we will head to the hills at local parks and learn how to properly perform hill intervals with our hiking poles.   The outdoor sessions will intermix interval hill training with many of the exercises we learned in Level I & II.  The combination of hiking specific exercises with hill intervals will not only help improve strength going up and down hills, but also help improve overall endurance on the trail throughout a hike or trek. Training in the outdoors on typical trail surfaces is one of the best ways to prepare for the trails.
