** Please read all of the Leader's Notes below. **

Everett's Basic Navigation Course is a single-day event that teaches how to use a topographic map, compass, and altimeter for back country navigation. The course also emphasizes advance preparation, terrain reckoning, and route finding as a team responsibility. It includes lectures, indoor exercises, and outdoor navigation instruction and hands-on practice.

Sign-in starts at 7:30 AM. There you will be assigned to your team for the day. Please be on time, the lectures and classwork will start promptly at 8 AM.

Maps and course material will be provided.  Please bring your compass (see Required Equipment for compass requirements), pencil and any note-taking material. Also bring  food, water and proper clothing for outdoor wilderness travel (no cotton, jeans or inappropriate shoes). Rain shell, gaiters, gloves and boots are highly recommended! The outdoor portion can be very wet and muddy and there are many plants with thorns, spines and prickles. Weather can range from mild & sunny to cold & rainy, please be prepared.

After the indoor portion is completed all teams will head out with their team leaders for the field exercises. **Note that the field exercises will total 5-6 miles round trip. We will be traveling on and off-trail on DNR land adjacent to Camp Edward.**  Once each team  has completed the exercises they will return to check in. Only when your entire team is accounted for can you leave.

Please contact us if there are any questions.

Thanks and see you in class!
