Introduction to Winter/Mixed Climbing -2026

Introduction to Winter/Mixed climbing is designed to teach the fundamental skills required to safely lead climb during the winter months on routes consisting of rock & ice. Instruction includes use of ice tools & crampons on rock, proper selection & placement of protection, anchor building & rappelling. To the extent practical, students will be allowed to progress at their own pace.

The course consists of 1 evening online zoom session on 1/15, a weekend field trip on 1/31-2/1 Leavenworth, and a one day field trip on 2/7 - 2/8 at Exit 38 . Please book all four days in calendar, given bad weather Leavenworth trip may get swapped with Drytooling at exit 38. Only Leavenworth will be a two day overnight trip.

The course prioritizes any Mountaineers Club member who is an intermediate student (LOR/IGC/AplineIce) or intermediate graduate in other branches. Course is also open to Basic Alpine Graduates but upon completion will not be allowed on winter mix climbs without other required qualifications.
