Intermediate Leading On Rock

The trad climbing portion of the Everett Intermediate Climbing Course. An application must be submitted and approved before individuals are accepted into this class.

The Leading on Rock module teaches all of the skills needed to build a climbing protection system using trad gear on 5th class rock routes.  Students will learn to place trad gear, evaluate the strength and security of placements, appropriately space gear, extend placements and make omnidirectional pieces.  They will also learn to build anchors on gear, utilize natural protection, build belay stations, and bring followers up to the belay.  Upon successful completion of the course, graduates will be qualified to serve as rope leaders on Basic Mountaineers Rock Climbs and instruct at intermediate rock field trips.  They will also be well prepared to pursue multipitch alpine rock objectives in the Cascades and beyond.

Required Equipment

Club ropes are provided for all field trips with the exception of LOR Squamish. Required equipment will be discussed in detail at the first meeting, LOR Intro Lecture and Practical.  Every student will need to acquire the following:

  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Rock shoes
  • Personal Anchor
  • Locking HMS Carabiner
  • ATC-guide, Reverso, or similar belay/rappel device
  • Cordellete
  • Alpine Draws
  • Belay gloves
  • Nut Tool
  • Cams and Nuts (you can start small and share gear)
