LOR 0.5 - Kick Off Practical
Students will head to Exit 32 to put what they learned at LOR 0 into practice, plus get introduced to 3 point anchor systems.
Student Learning Objectives:
- Students will review SERENE principles and apply knowledge when practicing complex anchor systems
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of trad climbing anchor systems using multiple methods
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of omnidirectional placements
Required Reading Between LOR 0 & LOR 0.5:
Rock Climbing Anchors, By Topher Donahue and Craig Luebben
- Chapter 2: read section "Natural Anchors".
- Chapter 3: read section on nuts and hexes. If you have Tricams, ball nuts, or Big Bros, you can bring them to the crag and try them out.
- Chapter 4: read the whole chapter. learn how to set and remove cams. Differentiate between good and bad placements and understand the special features from different cam manufacturers.
- Chapter 7: read the first 3-4 pages on anchor building principles. Page 142-145 talks about omnidirectionals.
Climbing Anchors, By John Long and Bob Gaines
- Chapter 8: read SRENE Anchors
- Chapter 9: Belay Anchors (at least the first 8 pages)
Climbing Self-Rescue, by Ian Nicholson
- Read Chapter 2 on how to belay from above and basic anchors
Little Si & Repo Towers
Proposed Timing: Meet at 7:30am, and work on course content 8am to 12pm

- Belay device with guide mode
- If you already have your own trad gear bring that as well. If you don’t have anything yet, there will plenty of instructor gear you can borrow to test out.
