Day Hike - Hurricane Hill

Leisurely hike along trail photographing wildflowers.

  • Moderate
  • Easy
  • Mileage: 3.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 750 ft

Slight change of plans for the meeting place on Saturday at 9am. Instead of inside the Visitors Center, please drive to the end of the paved area of Hurricane Ridge to the parking nearest the trailhead. This will be past the Visitors Center and past the picnic area. After you park, look for me and my car, a white Chrysler Seabring. I'm also attaching a map I found online.

Note: I will be arriving on Friday and camping at Heart O' the Hills.

We will leave the Hurricane Ridge Visitors Center and drive from the visitor's center to the end of Hurricane Ride Road and the Hurricane Hill trailhead (1.3 miles) and park near the picnic area. We will then hike at a leisurely pace to the top of Hurricane Hill. This is roughly a 3-mile round trip.

The trail is an old forest service road that provided access to the Hurricane Hill lookout when it was in use. The paved trail is wide and easy to follow, staying lever for the first 1/2 mile. It is another easy mile to the summit, with a moderate elevation gain. Be sure to carry water!

The trail offers great views the entire way. Mount Angeles (east) and Mount Olympus, with its multiple summits, are hard to miss on a clear day.  Mid-July is generally peak time for flowers on Hurricane Ridge.

Note: I called the ranger's station on 7/18/17. They told me that the lupine is in full bloom and we can still find avalanche lilies in shadier areas along Hurricane Hill. We should also see paintbrush and some other flowers. For those going up early and plan on exploring Obstruction Point, they said the avalanche lilies are abundant at the moment.
