Save My Seat

From warm and gorgeous to suddenly cold and foreboding, mountain weather can change in a heartbeat. But if you’ve planned for it, you can avoid an unpleasant and even potentially lethal situation. Join meteorologist and backcountry expert Jeff Renner to learn how to understand and prepare for dramatic mountain weather events. This is a free online webinar sponsored by Mountaineers Books, The Mountaineers and Washington Trails Association, July 19 at 7 p.m. (Pacific).

Jeff is the author of the new Mountain Weather Pocket Guide: A Field Reference, as well as the book, Mountain Weather: Backcountry Forecasting & Weather Safety for Hikers, Campers, Climbers, Skiers, Snowboarders. He was the on-air meteorologist for Seattle’s KING-5 evening news for more than 35 years.

Here’s what Jeff will discuss:

  • How to decide if the weather will be right for your mountain adventure
  • How to assess storm and avalanche hazards
  • How to read clouds, winds, and fronts
  • First-aid advice for weather-related injuries
  • Lightning hazards, wildfire, and flash flood safety information
  • When you should turn around versus when it is OK to press on

Whether you’re a backpacker, climber, or day-hiker, beef up your understanding of weather so are ready for whatever the mountains throw at you.

The presentation will last 30 minutes, followed by a question-and-answer conversation. Save your seat today—even if you can’t make the live presentation! Everyone who registers will receive a link to the recorded event to review or listen to at their convenience.
