Trip Report

Wellington Ghost Town to Windy Point on the Iron Goat trail

Mild sunny day on the Iron Goat trail. Lots of tragic history, wildflowers, butterflies & lush vegetation.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail tread surface is in good condition, just obscured by overhanging vegetation (see picture - which is taken from same location as the picture on the website post). FR6099 seems to have received some grading & fill-gravel for most of the potholes & hollows. The vault toilet at the TH is clean & had toilet paper. Lots of room in the parking lot for many vehicles. The backcountry toilet at Windy Point has been sealed with duct tape and the once-lovely view is overgrown. Clearly, not many have passed this section of the Iron Goat trail recently.

    Lush vegetation.

This GoHike group seemed to enjoy the route and reading all the information signs about construction of the snowshed and the 1910 avalanche disaster. The eerie feel of walking beneath the decrepit snowshed almost seemed to echo the lost souls (see picture). Lots of wildflowers. The morning low clouds cleared by the time we reached Windy Point for our lunch stop & turnaround point. Some wondered if we could have gone farther. It's only 1 more mile to the Iron Goat Interpretive site at Scenic.

Many wildflowers. These Stink Currant gave off a sweet scent.
