Stewardship - Campground Cleanups in the Olympic National Forest

The Olympia Mountaineers sponsored four stewardship trips throughout April to help our wonderful Olympic National Forest recreation managers clean up and prepare five campgrounds for opening. Four Olympia Stewardship Leaders stepped up to make this happen with amazing participation from members of 5 Mountaineers branches, making this a great success.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Five Campgrounds were cleaned up over three Saturdays plus one on Earth Day on April 22.  They were:  Big Creek, Hamma Hamma, Lena Creek, Collins and Browns Creek.  All are beautiful forested locations on the Olympic Peninsula with access on mostly paved roads in good condition.

After the winter, campgrounds are full of leaves, storm debris and some camper trash.Dirty fire ring.jpgCampsite after winter storms.jpg

It takes a lot of hands and tools to make a difference in big campgrounds.

Power tools really helped with all the logs and leaves.  Thanks to the Forest Service for loaning us some of their equipment.

Smiles were plentiful along with good Mountaineers camaraderie.
