Trip Report

Sea Kayak - San Juan Islands from Anacortes

Figure-8 circumnavigation of Burrows and Allan islands.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Route conditions were super fine with calm waters and calm winds all day. The very small range between high and low tide during this paddle made for lower than typical currents for the venue.

A most excellent 8.4 nMi paddle around Burrows and Allan island with the Everett Mountaineers Sea Kayaking branch. Many thanks to all who assisted!

Currents were mild this day. We left on time and made our first stop at Burrows Light for lunch. Next, we entered Allan Pass with about .8 knots of current in our favor. There we practiced using a forward range to stay on course across the pass then continued on our clockwise circumnavigation of Allan Island. Upon our return to the west end of Allan Pass we then followed a forward range to the gap between Burrows and Young Island. Again riding the same current for a nice assist.

We stopped at Alice Bight for a break and some rescue practice. Afterward, we followed another forward range toward Skyline for one final bit of ferry practice, this time working with the current in Burrows Pass.

Seas remained calm for our paddle around Fidalgo Head and Green Point on our return to Susnet Beach in Washington Park.
