Trip Report

Sea Kayak - Hobuck Beach & Neah Bay

Completed this trip in difficult conditions - fog and 6 foot swells.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The 5 of us launched from Hobuck with a varied forecast. Surfline predicted 3-4 foot swells, and  Surf-forecast predicted 6 foot swells. No forecast warned of fog.

The fog worsened, but I had a GPS, which helped us visualize our distance from the shore and the breaking waves.  WE had to go 1/4 mile outside Anderson Point to avoid breaking surf. Were worried about landing on Shi Shi Beach. I had been there before, and from observing the wave pattern on Google Earth, landing on the very south end of the beach has been rock-free with manageable surf.  Once we were able to see the stakes on the south end of beach, the wave decreased to 4 ft. and significantly less energy. We were able to land without any capsizes. Unfortunately, with 6 feet swells we were not able to paddle among the stacks.

The return to Hobck the next day was easier with 5 foot swells, less breaking waves and able to land on the beach north of Anderson Point for a break.
