Hobuck Beach & Neah Bay

Trip

Sea Kayak - Hobuck Beach & Neah Bay

The plan is to camp one night on Shi Shi beach, staging us close to Point of Aches for an afternoon and morning of fun. This trip is part of the Surf and Camp Sea Kayaking event at Hobuck. If conditions are too high for a coastal trip our backup plan is to paddle, hike and camp at Lake Ozette.

Leader's notes:

The plan is to spend one night camping  on Shi Shi Beach and explore the area around  Point of Arches and Father and Son sea stacks.

GOALS:
Have fun safely exploring these dynamic waters.
Paddle together in a cohesive group, to ensure CLAP (Communication, Line of Sight, Avoidance, Position of most effectiveness).
Participate in group decisions and abide by decisions.

 COST:
Reimburse the leader for permits (Olympic National Park Wilderness Permit is $8/per person per night), which will be purchased close to the trip date.

CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Please understand the following conservative conditions must be forecasted for this trip to go.  I would guess that there is a 30-50% chance the condition could exceed the remix and the trip canceled.  Our backup plan will be to kayak around Lake Ozette, camp at Erickson's Bay, and  hike 4 mi RT to  Sand Point on the Beach.

Conditions must be within the following for this trip to go:
Winds: sustained under 15kt and gust under 18kt,
Swell less than 3-4 feet.
No big rainfall (<.25 inches)
Minimum of 3 participants.

 REQUIREMENTS:
Previous Incident Management Clinic
Have a reliable roll.
Ability to land and launch in 3-foot surf and paddle in 4-6 foot wind waves.
Previous experience in dynamic water (e.g. Deception, Hobuck, etc.)
A plastic/tough kayak that is suitable for surf and rock gardening.
Approved bear canisters for food and toilet articles that can be carried in the boat.
Experience with wilderness camping from a kayak.

We will plan to launch from Hobuck Beach with boats loaded at 10am.  Beach talk at 945am.

See leader notes - if conditions are too high to go to Shi Shi we will plan to leave Hobuck at 9am to our backup launch site at Lake Ozette.
